The “Find My Location” feature in Connect 211’s Resource Directory works a little differently depending on whether you are on a desktop or mobile device. This is because of the way these technologies operate under the hood.
Mobile Device
Mobile phones, tablets, and other devices with GPS generally provide the user’s location with a high degree of accuracy, as long as the user allows them to. GPS can often pinpoint the user’s location to within a few feet.
Desktops
Most laptops and desktops do not have GPS. When the browsers asks them for their location, results often vary widely depending on your Internet Service Provider, computer settings, and more. For example, a common outcome is for your “location” to default to the nearest ISP hub that you are connected to. That could be either down the street, or in a neighboring city, or even further. Results like this are often least accurate in rural areas.
Desktop users may get more accurate results by manually adding their address, ZIP, city, etc.
